v1.19.16 โ€” Leave of absence joins Requests & Approvals, and dark mode respects your institution

A student can now request a leave of absence and, separately, request to come back, through the same Requests & Approvals page institutions already use for other requests. Tenant brand colors now render correctly in dark mode automatically, instead of forcing an admin to pick a lighter color to pass the contrast check. A writer using dark mode can now keep the document itself on white "paper" while the rest of the editor stays dark. Also: Radar can track funding-agency grant feeds, and a batch of smaller fixes.

Request a leave of absence, and request to come back

The Requests & Approvals engine adds its first request type that changes a student's standing with the institution rather than a single course registration: leave of absence. Going on leave and returning from leave are two separate request types, each reviewed by the registrar on its own โ€” so the same button never has to mean opposite things depending on state a student can't see, and a second request filed by mistake can't quietly reverse an approval that already happened. A leave request only ever touches institution-wide standing; a student's individual course registrations are unaffected and stay something the student manages separately.

Tenant brand colors now render correctly in dark mode

An institution's brand color used to get painted straight onto the dark background unchanged, which is why the honest contrast warning added recently kept firing for perfectly normal school colors โ€” deep navy, maroon, forest green all read as too dark against Folio's near-black dark mode. Folio now derives a dark-mode-safe version of the same color automatically: a color that already reads well is left exactly as the admin picked it, and one that doesn't is lifted toward white by just enough to clear the readability bar, so it still looks like the school's color. Light mode is untouched.

Keep the document on paper while the app stays dark

Dark mode used to carry all the way into the document itself, but the page is a simulation of what gets printed or exported to PDF โ€” checking line breaks or figure placement on a dark page shows something different from what a journal will actually see. This is now a separate, opt-in choice: dark app chrome with a normal white page underneath, so proofing stays honest without giving up dark mode everywhere else you don't need paper-accurate color. Off by default โ€” nothing changes until you turn it on in account โ†’ Appearance โ†’ Editor, or from the editor's own toolbar.

Also new

  • Radar can track grant and funding-agency feeds. Alongside the RSS/news/tech feeds Radar already tracks, you can now add a funding agency's feed (grants.gov works out of the box, or paste any other agency's feed URL) and follow new grant postings the same way.
  • The referral card shows up after exporting a PRISMA diagram or forest plot, the same "give a month, get a month" prompt already shown after other exports.

Fixed

  • Institution pages with a custom brand color no longer flash the wrong layout on load. The footer, top nav, and sidebar briefly rendered one way and then snapped to another right after the page loaded on institution subdomains โ€” a mismatch between what the server sent and what the browser first painted. They now render consistently from the first frame.
  • The Audit and Reviewer panels now fit on a phone. Both used to render as a fixed 280px-wide rail regardless of screen size, leaving barely any room for the writing canvas on a phone. They now adapt to small screens instead of squeezing everything else out.
  • Radar's create-agent form explains itself when it opens automatically. Arriving from "Track topic" in search used to pop open a prefilled agent form with no context for why. It now shows a short note that it was prefilled from your search, so it reads as intentional rather than stray UI.
