v1.19.20 โ€” A new look, and bring your own domain

Folio has a new visual identity: the Fraunces wordmark front and center, a gold full stop, and cobalt taking its place in the favicon and avatars. Institutions can now serve Folio from their own domain, verified by DNS. Course-wide reading lists are reachable again no matter how many modules a course has. Discovery Agents and Radar now search arXiv and Europe PMC too, not just OpenAlex. Also: a distinct start flow for office-hours instructors, the Made-with-Folio mark now reaches docx and PDF exports, and a save-to-library bug and some stale pricing-page copy are fixed.

A new look

Folio's identity is now built around the thing that was already distinctive: the Fraunces wordmark itself, set bold and wide. The full stop after "Folio" is gold โ€” written by you, period. Cobalt, the brand's accent color, now shows up where it used to be missing: the browser tab icon, your avatar, and the home-screen icon if you've added Folio to your phone. Nothing about how you use Folio changed โ€” this is the paint, not the plumbing.

Bring your own domain

Institutions can now serve Folio from their own domain instead of a folio.education subdomain. An admin points their domain at Folio, publishes a DNS TXT record to prove they own it, and only a verified domain starts routing traffic โ€” nothing goes live on an unverified claim. A new Setup guide tab on the custom-domain panel walks through the records in the order you actually need them, including the one step that isn't automatic: attaching TLS after verification.

Course-wide reading lists are reachable again

Readings that don't belong to any particular module โ€” a course-wide section, not one unit's โ€” used to live in a spot the course page only showed while a course had zero modules. The moment you created your first module, that section disappeared, and with it any way to reach a course-wide reading again. It's renamed Course-wide and stays visible to instructors regardless of how many modules the course has.

Discovery Agents and Radar now search arXiv and Europe PMC

Both your Discovery Agents and Radar's topic and author subscriptions used to search OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, and CrossRef only. They now also pull preprints from arXiv and biomedical literature from Europe PMC, so agent findings and your Radar feed cover more of what's actually being published.

Also new

  • Office hours have a distinct start flow for instructors. Because the underlying video room hands host controls to whoever arrives first, students still see "Join office hours" while instructors see "Start office hours" and skip straight into the room โ€” giving the instructor a head start rather than a hard guarantee. A (?) next to the card explains why.
  • The Made-with-Folio mark now reaches Word and PDF exports, alongside a backlink comment in exported BibTeX โ€” matching what already showed up in other export formats.
  • A "Track as Discovery Agent" button now sits on your saved searches, so you can turn a search you already run regularly into a standing agent without rebuilding it from scratch.

Fixed

  • Saving a paper from a public scale page could fail outright. The button on scales/[slug] was passing a source value the database didn't recognize, so every save from that page 500'd instead of landing in your library.
  • The pricing page had drifted from what plans actually include. Surveyor was shown as Chair-only when it's available lower, the Cold Start Program listed 1 report a month instead of 3, and certificates read as gated to Fellow and above when they aren't. The page also now lists Discovery Agents, MCP, and attested writing, which had shipped but were missing from the comparison.
