v1.19.23 — Provenance flags edits after anchoring, and inline images in course units

The provenance chain now says whether an anchored document has actually stayed the same since — not just that a fingerprint was in the batch. Institutions IT/helpdesk can start a password reset without ever seeing or setting the password. Also: media uploads for course lessons, inline images inside a unit walkthrough, a nudge to claim your Researcher Directory handle, Surveyor combines results across instrument versions, and DOI/retraction and grading-policy fixes.

Provenance now says whether an anchored document has changed since

An inclusion proof has always said a document's fingerprint was in an externally anchored batch. It never said whether that fingerprint still describes the document today — every surface that shows "externally anchored," including the share card, /verify, and a funder-compliance packet, was resting on an assumption. Folio now re-derives that answer from the document's own version history: it checks the anchored leaf against the document as it stands now, and if that doesn't match, against the version that existed at the moment the batch was cut. A document that's been edited since anchoring is now labeled as such, honestly, instead of reading as untouched. Where there's no history to check against, it's shown as unknown — never as a false mismatch.

IT/helpdesk can start a password reset, but never see or set it

Institutions' scoped helpdesk role could already diagnose an account and revoke a session, but a password reset still meant emailing a human at Folio. It can now trigger one directly: the operator names a user, and Supabase sends that account's own recovery link. The operator can start a reset and can never finish one — there's no password read and no password set, and the recovery link never passes through our systems or their screen.

Also new

  • A course lesson's image or video can now be uploaded directly, instead of only linked by URL.
  • An instructor writing a course unit can drop an image inline, mid-paragraph, instead of only as its own separate content block.
  • A verified researcher with live certificates or imported publications now gets a one-time nudge to choose a handle so their work shows up in the public Researcher Directory.
  • Surveyor's results view now combines matching responses from an earlier instrument version into the current statistics, instead of excluding them outright — including when a choice question's answer options changed between versions.

Fixed

  • DOI checks now catch a Retraction Watch backlink even after Crossref posts a corrected version of it, instead of only recognizing the first, stale one.
  • An academic standing audit now uses the institution's actual grading policy, instead of the default, when it runs.
  • The Requests composer (course drop, grade appeal, leave of absence) now pairs every field with its label, so a screen reader announces what it's for instead of staying silent.
