Click Export in the editor. The menu is grouped by what each option makes.
Manuscript
- Word document (.docx): all your text and formatting (headings, lists, tables, bold, italic), inline citations in your document's style, the bibliography at the end, and real Word footnotes when your style uses notes (Chicago notes-bibliography).
- PDF: the same, typeset by Folio. Every font is embedded, so Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, math symbols and CJK text print correctly, with right-to-left paragraphs laid out right to left.
- PDF typeset with LaTeX: a PDF built through LaTeX.
- LaTeX source: a zip with
main.tex, its.biband the figures, ready to compile or upload to Overleaf. Citations are real LaTeX citations against the.bib, whose keys match the BibTeX export. - Web page (.html).
- Submission package: the Word file, its references and a README in one zip.
Before any of these, Folio saves your latest changes and waits for the save to be confirmed, so the file always matches what's saved. If the save can't be confirmed, nothing is exported and Folio tells you, instead of handing you a stale file. If you cite a retracted paper, Folio points it out before you export.
Options
- Anonymize for review removes your name and self-citations from the manuscript files, for double-blind submission. Reference lists stay as they are.
- US Letter paper switches PDF, Word and LaTeX pages from A4 to US Letter.

Reference list only
You can export just the references, useful for another reference manager or a standalone list:
- BibTeX: for LaTeX workflows and reference managers
- RIS: for Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, and similar tools
- CSL-JSON: the format Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote exchange most cleanly
To copy a single formatted reference, use the Bibliography panel.
Citation style on export
The bibliography exports in whatever citation style is currently set for the document. If you need a different format, change the style in the editor's formatting bar before exporting; all citations and the bibliography reformat instantly.
The "Made with Folio" mark
Word and PDF exports carry a small "Made with Folio" credit on the Scholar and Fellow plans. On Chair it is off.
Available on all plans
Document export is available on Scholar (free), Fellow, and Chair plans. There are no limits on how many times you can export.
