The idea
Hover over any inline citation, like (Smith, 2024), and a card appears showing the source behind it: title, authors, year and journal, plus a warning if the paper has been retracted. No scrolling to the bibliography, no searching.
Why it matters
In a heavily cited section, you lose track of which citation refers to which paper. Scrolling to the bottom of a 5,000-word document to check a reference breaks your reading flow. A hover preview keeps you in context: you see the source without leaving the paragraph you're reading. It's especially useful during editing, when you're checking whether you cited the right source in the right place.
Where we are
This feature shipped. Hover any in-text citation in the editor and the card appears after a short pause. From the card, Show in sources opens the source in the editor's Sources panel and Open in reader opens its PDF. With the keyboard, focus a citation and press Enter to open it in the Sources panel.
