Open Account settings from the menu under your avatar. Settings is one page with a list of sections on the side (on a phone the list comes first, and tapping a section opens it). Switches save the moment you flip them and show a small "Saved" mark; text fields in your profile wait for Save changes in the bar at the bottom.
Profile
How you appear across Folio and on your public page: your name, display name, photo (PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 5 MB), bio, field of study, specialization, academic level and research interests. Radar, journal matching and Research and start also read your field and level, so filling them in makes those suggestions sharper.
The same section holds your public profile: the handle, whether the page is public, whether it is listed in the directory, and which parts of it show. That has its own article: Your public profile.
Account and security
- Email: change your sign-in email. Folio sends a link to the new address, and the change applies once you open it.
- Password: changing your password asks for the current one first. If you signed up with Google, Microsoft or another provider, you can set a password here so you can also sign in with your email.
- Sign-in methods: every way you can currently sign in to this account.
- Sessions: Sign out other devices ends every session except the one you are using, in other browsers, on phones and on other computers.
Writing
- Default citation style: every new document starts in this style (APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18, IEEE, Harvard or Vancouver). It does not change documents you already have, and you can still switch any document in the editor.
- Start page: where you land after signing in, unless the link you followed goes somewhere else. Choose the dashboard, the last document you edited, or your library.
Appearance
These follow your account, so they apply on every device you sign in on.
- Theme: light, dark, or system (follows your device).
- Keep the page on paper in dark mode: the app stays dark while the page you write on stays light, like the printed page it exports to.
- Reduce motion: turns off animations and smooth scrolling across Folio. When it is off, Folio follows your device's own setting.
- Interface language: English, Arabic or Hebrew. On usefolio.co the interface is in English for now; the language you pick here is used on your institution's Folio site.
- Time zone: deadlines and course times show in this zone. Automatic uses your device's zone.
Notifications
Notifications are grouped by topic: your work (deadline reminders, the weekly research summary, and whether that summary includes your writing streak), people and courses (collaboration emails, and in-app alerts for course activity), Radar (digest frequency, on Fellow and Chair), and news from Folio (product updates and the newsletter, which stays off unless you turn it on). Each discovery agent has its own email settings, linked from here.
Pause all non-essential email stops reminders, summaries, digests and newsletters in one switch. Sign-in, security and billing emails still arrive. An unsubscribe link no longer changes your settings by itself: it opens this section and asks whether to pause email, and nothing changes until you click Pause email.
Connected accounts
Services Folio can use on your behalf, and exactly what it may do with each. Only services that are set up on Folio appear here, and today that is Zotero: save a Zotero API key once, and Add source → Zotero offers Import with your saved key, so you can re-import your library without pasting the key again. The key is stored encrypted and never sent back to your browser. Disconnect removes it.
Calendar sync with Google or Microsoft, Google Sheets exports into your own Drive, and ORCID verification are built but not switched on yet. They will appear in this section when they are, not before.
AI assistants
Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code or another MCP client to your library, see which apps are connected, disconnect one, or create a personal access key. The full walkthrough is in Connect your library to an AI assistant.
Plan and billing
Your plan, what it allows, and how much of each allowance you have used (this month on Scholar; over the last day or hour for the daily and hourly limits on Fellow and Chair). On a paid plan, Manage subscription lets you update your payment method, open the billing portal to change plan or billing cycle, cancel, or resume a cancellation before it takes effect. See Plans and billing.
Invite colleagues
Your invite link. A colleague who signs up with it gets their first month of Fellow free, and you get a free month when one of them subscribes. The section shows how many have joined and subscribed, and how many months you have banked.
Beta program
Join the waitlist for early access to features still being built, or leave the program if you are in it.
Privacy and data
- Opt out of product analytics applies on this device and to your account.
- Export your data: everything as a ZIP (documents as Markdown, your library as BibTeX and RIS, and a full JSON copy), or just the JSON, BibTeX or RIS file.
- Your academic record (courses, grades, attendance and your certificates) is exported separately, from your academic record page.
More on what Folio does with your data: Your data and privacy.
Delete account
Deleting your account removes your documents, sources, and every artifact and setting on it. If you have published Integrity Certificates or Folio Reviews, the section tells you how many, because every link you have shared to them stops working. An active subscription has to be canceled first so you are not charged after the account is gone. To confirm, type DELETE.
